Announcement: Nile Role-Play

Raptors has announced another great AoMH community project, it stars Shaba Ka in an Egyptian-themed RPG. After a brutal and harsh massacre Shaba Ka was imprisoned however no one dared face him. Soon after the prison was destroyed and Shaba Ka managed to escape. There are some great features that make this scenario stand out. For one, you mostly stay in the city but you can travel outside the city on quests and expeditions. This RPG is one of those "advance up the social ladder" types which has you starting out very poor and quickly become a rich and powerful person. You can also perform assassinations on certain figures. Though the map is pretty small, Raptors has been able to fit 30 quests on it(You can read it on his thread.). The RPG is 78% finished and should be up o the DL section in the coming month.

Update: Wanderer Of Worlds

You might remember a while ago MetalPyro876 announced his RPG project, now he has updated his scenario announcement with several great new screenshots much better than last time obviously showing he has improved since then, my favorites were the Peaceful Village and the Ominous Temple. MetalPyro876 is still looking for quest ideas, you can suggest any you might have in his thread, he could definitely use them.

Announcement: Roman Detectives Scenario

Salem is actually quite a experienced designer, he has recently announced a new project in the making which is based upon ancient Rome. The maps are planned to be very large( 1000x1000!) and there will be four chapters. The basic story is about a Roman boy who discovers his senator uncle was killed now he must investigate it. There are also a couple of mods to be installed but it's worth it for such a scenario. There are also many choices to make the biggest being whether to become a powerful politician or join the army. This sound like a very interesting idea, look for updates by Salem when the time comes.

Announcement: Mythodea RM

Nottud has created a Mythodea RM. It was a tough task, but it was completed. In this RM there are five different map themes which range from marshy to a sandy theme(pictured), another thing is there are twelve levels to choose from with a new God Power granted every level up. Every theme will also have a Hesperides tre which can be captured by a team to train dryads. 20 random events and new SFX have bee implemented to make the game more interesting. You can download it now and try it out for yourself.

A Look Back: Scenario

This screen was given out at the MS games international festival press kit, it was originally from an earlier version of the AoM campaign. There are definitely some interesting things to see here. One thing is the camel. The camel was a deleted nature unit, but it's textures and icon can still be found in the textures.bar it was only seen here and had the same fate as the wild horse. An archery for the Egyptians can also be seen, this was originally planned for al three civs to have but it was the left only to greek units. You can see AoM coming together in this stage as many things are being taken out to reshape the game.

Update: Ancient Age Mod

The creators of the ongoing TAD mod have released another showcase this time on the Princep.Princeps are an upgrade to the Hastati at Age III, the Princep is another addition to the list of different infantry units in the Roman civilization, look for more updates and screenshots in the future.

The FireFax Show: AoE porting

Here is something new I'm trying with AoEI, every week I'll have a topic to discuss here, today I chose it on the porting of AoE games. As you may know, The Age Of Kings has already been ported to DS and the same thing is happening to Age Of Mythology. While this was good for DS owners, a handful of fans of the series weren't to happy with it. So what do you think about this, is it a way to bring back game for new players who don't know about it or is it merely another way to make money of a popular series? On a comedic side, I investigated what it would be like if someone ported AoM to a PSP.
First off, the cover would like a cheap ripoff of the original, which is what happened in The Age Of Kings port. If this happened with AoM, it's going to look like this: From the original, to the weird knockoff(That's actually ES concept art for AoM.). Next, we have the actual game, to deal with the supposed low quality of ports and the PSP's inability to handle so many graphics, the company will have to make serious cutbacks. So now there are only three buildings, you cannot age up, there are only two myth units, and every civ only has one cavalry and infantry unit type. The resources have also been wrecked, now the only resources you can get are wood and gold, no favor and no food. With all these large gameplay cutbacks, now the civs look horrific, did I mention there aren't even major gods? With the Greeks, you're getting the two most overused myth units in the AoM series: Cyclops and Minotaur. As Egyptians, sphinxes and mummies seem to be the only existing myth units in Egyptian mythology for the developers, so they went and put them in without even doing any research on them. Norse are no better, rather than teaching players about the vast mythologies of the norse, they'd rather just put in a mountain giant and troll. As far as Singleplayer goes, they ever rarely include many map in ports, here you're in for such exciting maps as "DESERT", "SNOWLAND", "MEDITERRANEAN", and "UNDERGROUND", the last one is suppose to be Underworld, but they only know so much about mythology. Then when you actually start playing, all you start out with is a market, from there you store resources and train villagers, after spending all that time finding resources and manage to build a barracks before the Overpowered AI sends their army to destroy your base, you realise you can only train 6 infantry units and 3 cavalry units, by now the owner of the game has already given up and returned the game. But for you gentlemen that are still playing, you find that your resources are depleted! So now you aimlessly wander a poorly-made map with only one floor texture, random cliffs, and trees and small rocks scattered around the map to act as scenery. If you're still here after that horrible match, now you can play the campaign! No crappy port is complete without one. As everything here is, the scenarios you must go through are bland and unoriginal and leaves you wondering why you bought the game in the first place. They'll probably have you doing common objectives like escorting something, defending an area except that's too hard because the company was too lazy to put in a watch tower building, or possibly worst of all: you just walk around a map fighting stuff and trying to stay alive till you reach a certain point, with the common skirmish with campaign-only units. And of course, every campaign you control a hero you can't play in regular games. Oh and I forgot about water, yeah this game has it, but there aren't any boats to control! All you can do is just stare at a few as they pass you by during a cinematic. This basically sums up what a port of AoM would be like, so if someone asked me if I would like a port of AoM for PSP, I'd punch them, kick them right in the balls, and push him of a very tall cliff. In summary: PORTS TO HANDHELDS ARE ABOMINATIONS!

TAD To Be Ported To Macs

Destineer has just announced two days ago that they are porting AoE III: TAD to macs! This is great news for many mac users because they can finally catch up to the current TAD events. The port is expected to be released on the 8th of July.

Announcement: Wanderer Of Worlds

One of the newer designers of AoMH, metalpyro876 has set out to create an RPG. He says the RPG will be free-roam like WoW or Oblivion. No RPG is complete without bosses, there are many in here. There are also choices to make in the scenario like deciding which mission to do first. Judging from the screenshots, the scenario has barely been started and with a few practice I'm sure he can pull off a great RPG.

Announcement: Remnak's Bane

OmegasRage is making a new RPG campaign. So far he's got two chapters nearly finished with more on the way. If you've played RPG's before, you might know what the turn-based battle systems are like, this is what OmegasRage plans to integrate into his project. Another feature is that the campaign will have many mazes and puzzles to add some challenge to the game. Look for more information on this game soon.

Update: Hoplite Mod

Epic Studio's Hoplite mod has been updated with previews of the Hoplite Barracks and the new versions of their Hoplites. The mod is well on it's way to be on The Downloads section, though progress has been slow as of late, you can see Epic Studios knows what it's doing when you look at some of their units like their Spartan Hoplite. Look for new previews coming out soon.

A Look Back: Greek-Egyptian Face-off

Today's screenshot is from the time of E3 2001, it shows how a battle would have looked like in that stage. Though the Egyptian units on the right have been all mentioned the Greek cavalry isn't seen much. The cavalry next to the Prodromos is what is now the Hippikon, another very rare unit is seen in a few places here: the toxotes. They seem to not only have a different texture, but an old model altogether. There reallyisn't much to show here, however the screen is quite rare.

New Mods on AoMH

For those who may not have noticed, the DL section is filling up with some new mod units, the most notable one being the new Greek archer, the Lionas(Pictured). Many mods these days are created by new modders, you can support them by possibly creating a review or adding a comment.

Age Of Heroes RELEASED!

New Weekly Screenshot: Outnumbered In The Mountains

Our newest Weekly Screenshot! Though we don't have anything we'd like to share just now, we are working on some great new RLE material. Also, PPE is away so I'm posting the latest WS for him. Named Outnumbered In The Mountains, it's the first ever WS to be featured in a snowy setting, the Romans are encountering the Norse in a bloody battle in the mountains, while Praetorian Troopers fight Jarls down below. I'm quite happy with the results.

A Look Back: Preparing For Battle

This week's screenshot shows how the Greek civilization looked like before. There are several things to note here. The old Oak trees are in abundance here. The Siege Works can be seen here, in the original plan for the game, instead of fortresses having to create siege weapons, every Civilization had a siege works to produce ballistas, catapults, and siege towers. You'll also notice there's a building next to the armory as well, that is not the Greek shrine, but it was actually the Greek City center as it was known back then. The deign of the Center was changed a while later to what you'd find now.

Napoleonic Era Open Beta

AoE III's revolutionary mod is having an open beta soon which includes new features like new Saloon and Capitol improvements. In the beta, a new building will be included: the university. The university provides random improvements and other things as well. There will also be new units featured such as the swashbuckler or sharpshooter, which will belong to selected civilizations. Possibly the major feature, the beta includes the Austrians, the Italians, the Polish, the Prussians, the Swedish, the Swiss, and the United States as all-new civilizations. There will also be minor gameplay changes as well. You can find out more information on this at the thread.

Announcement: Tribe Wars

In AoE III news, Moshelevi has announced his latest project which is a 2v2 supremacy map, your resources are received from from the 18 trading and native outposts scattered around the map. Gameplay is easy, enough you start out with some mercenaries and a covered wagon, build up your base, gain control of the outposts, and defeat your opponent. Your villagers are recieved from the outposts, you also train warrirs from your controlled outposts which has been doubled. Basically, this map centers on land control and managing them well. The map is actually finished, it should only take a few days for it to get put on the DL section.

Announcement: The Hoplites

As one of Epic Studios premier mods, they have recently announced their Hoplite mod to the public. This is another Hoplite mod featuring Spartan and Athenian Hoplites but for the first time, this mod brings you the Thebian and Corinthian variations as well. these will be trainable at the Greek Barracks and a few other new buildings yet to be created. The models and helmets are all new and also have lots of shield variations, the mod is planned to work on both AoM and AoM: TT. Who knows, if this mod is completed, the Greek improvement mod may get a little competition.

New Weekly Screenshot: Guarding The Valley

After much hard work and dedication, I present to you our latest WS for the Roman expansion, it showcases our newest progress, the praetorian guard! This is by far the hardest screen I made as of late. Originally I planned the area below to be an ocean, then we experienced proto.xml and shield texture problems. The screen even went through 4 drafts before the finished product you see before you. Please enjoy the fruits of my labor and make sure to tune in next week for another new WS.

Interview: Dark Archer

Dark archer is one of the fouder of tribulation designs and one of the more respected members of AoEH. In celebration of Tribulation design's anniversary, I got an interview with him.

1. So how long have you been with AoEH?

Let me just check my profile. Says I joined 20th of January 2005. So about 3 half years now. It truly is amazing how time files when you are having fun. As staff though it is harder to place. The thread Doc made to congratulate me was made on the 8th of July 2007 but from memory it decided that I would be on staff earlier but Doc went on holiday (he used to do that a lot :P) so I had to sit tight until he got back.

2. What do you basically do in terms of design and HG?

In terms of design? Not much. :P I'm what I call an on again off again designer. When I feel like it I'll have spells where I just get into the editor and start designing everyday or so. Then I have huge breaks I don't. But on the other side of design I'm around AoEH and Tribulation Designs (TD) a lot to help others with their design projects and give advise on screenshots. I suppose that is something to do with design. :P

Now it terms of HG it's quite different. Currently I'm working for Dr Lorenzo at AoEH making sure all the uploads to the download section the Granary go though quickly. I feel I have made a difference as the upload times have been cut down a lot. Where it once took days sometimes even weeks to see your work uploaded now it should only be a couple of days. The other things I do are news when there is something or I get time and moderating the forums which are usually pretty quite. Also as non staff stuff I usually can be found discussing aspects of designing and having fun the Veni, Vidi, Vici.

3. What did you expect when you created tribulation?

Well technically Chris Mattox created Tribulation Designs. I just was talking to the right person at the right time. At the time me and Chris were talking on MSN regularly and I just happened to have set up the kind of forum he was using for something I had done. So I helped him with that and he made me a leader of the team and a founder. Anyway back to the question. To be honest I never really knew what to expect. Really I just started this thing with Chris and we went from there. I never really gave much thought to Tribulation Designs but I suppose if anything I expected I'd do a team project at some stage but so far we haven't even done that. We've started but never finished. Maybe we'll get there one day. :P

4. What would you say is your best work yet?

Hmmm, that is a hard one. I haven't done much to choose from and to be honest I don't think I really have a best as such. I like all the works I have done as they all have something that makes them special. Death of the Morads brought me my first top rating for a scenario/campaign and is currently my highest, my Language.dll Bundle got me my first top rating and is the most downloaded Miscellaneous File, Out from the Cliffs is my latest and has been really fun to do and Turok Swamp (unreleased) features some of my best use of design tricks. Plus there are the two articles I've done on the language.dll. So like I said to start with, from my small selection I don't think I really can pick a best.

5. Did you ever have any plans or ideas you were never able to complete?

Definitely. When I first joined the AoEH forums I started on a project I called Journey of the Dragon Sword. The first scenario was never complete for Journey of the Dragon Sword but the underlying idea's been done again as it had the name Out from the Cliffs and as you know that is the name of my latest scenario as well. Both ideas involved villages set in the cliffs building an army and fighting out. Of course the first Out from the Cliffs can never be finished as I choose not to keep it during a format of my hard drive. Really I just never really thought it all though and couldn't do it to the end. Also in the plans I haven't completed is a number of TD team projects and a RP I was going to do. However the two ideas I think I could never give up on is The Great General Arkon which has been going for years now (it must be nearing three if it isn't already there) and TD.

6. Do you enjoy the other Age games? What else do you usually play?

Well I've played a bit of all the vanilla Age games at least. I never really got into the other Age games as much as the first but I still have a copy of Age of Kings and The Conquerors floating around that a play now and then. Unfortunately my computer graphics card is pretty bad and although I supposably can play Age of Mythology on it I've never actually tried. As for playing Age of Empires 3, I've played that at cyber cafes. Still Age of Empires is still my personal favorite. As for other games they are mostly online flash games these days or freeware stuff that I download off the net. Nothing really mainstream.

7. Thanks for letting me interview you, anything else to say?

Well thanks for the interview. Be sure to check out Tribulation Designs at tribulationdesigns.com the age old question on weather we should expand into new games has just started again and Age of Mythology is on the table so join the forums pop and say hi. Thanks again for the interview and covering the release of Out from the Cliffs.

Age Of Mythology on DS!

Remember the Age Of Kings port for DS? Well now Griptonite aims to port Age Of mythology too. From the gameplay, it is once again turn-based and features what you would normally see in AoM. Yes there will be god powers like meteors so you can relive the fun. There are also three campaigns, each based on some sort of hero like Perseus or Ramses. There is also aging up once again, so the game still interests players who played the original AoM. Multiplayer is also another feature. You can also challenge friends wirelessly. The game is expected to come out sometime in 2008, I'll keep you posted on recent updates

Announcement: Age Of Heroes

One of the largest projects lately, Dope has announced Age Of Heroes which follows the story of five heroes and also has you returning to places from the campaign, just like in my scenario ideas. There are 15 scenarios and 10 cinematics. The best part it i also accessible to vanilla users. Difficulties and objectives are usually varied sometimes being build and destroy style or something else. The story is also pretty good. Basically after Gargharensis' death, his son Polyphemus swears to avenge his death by destroying all who were part of his death. Now Poseidon returns once again and you must stop them before it is too late. The campaign also comes with three menu backgrounds as well.

Announcement: Out On The Cliffs

Tribulation Designs has released another wonderful AoE scenario, Out from the cliffs is a build and attack scenario. The story centers around Chief Rodes as he attempts to reclaim his old village which was forcibly taken from when he was a child. The map is moderately small with only four players, though there is a challenge like fighting swordsmen with axes and the map is pretty varied. The scenario is already out for download at the granary, so go try it.

Interview: Tilanus Commodor

I interviewed the modder responsible for the Ancient Age mod recently, it took some doing to convince him, though eventually he agreed to do the interview.
1. Hello, first off, why not tell us your history with AoE III, what did you mod before?

Luckily I can say that I’ve always been addicted to the Age Of Empires Series. So it was obvious that I’d buy the third part when ES announced it. AoE3 was my first game whose whole online history I experienced completely. I joined age-community.net - a german community – and later on Xastor started »Napoleonic Era« - I was a big fan of his project and imperatively wanted to contribute something. At the beginning I suggested units, after some weeks I already had to make researches about ship and town names with attractive historical background. By and by my area of responsibility extended and I was managing the NE forums and partially the promotion, I was translating, discussing and advising. As a result of it I became member of the NE Core Team. However, I never really modded for Napoleonic Era, never touched the really relevant codes or made any conspicuous graphics.

2. So what did you think of the napoleonic mod?

I thought and still think that Napoleonic Era is presently the most professional modification for AoE3. I was happy being part of a team that always knew what to do and how to do it, especially the quality of their work is great. They did an excellent job. Most of them are busy now with other things, mostly school, real life issues and Xastor is taking part in the development of Dawn Of Fantasy. So the final cut takes longer as it was intended and this is somehow taking out the dash of Napoleonic Era. Nevertheless we will definitely release a final version.

3. And What do you expect in the future out of your Ancient Age Mod?

If I’d expect too much of myself or the team I’d probably never finish it. Of course, I hope that this project will be successful and that I’ll keep my motivation even in bad times. =)

4. What advice would you have for the new modders out there?

Ah, new modders, that’s good music in my ears. =) I’d really like to see some of them, but they just hide, unfortunately. I would really like to see more self-confident people who just want to be creative or helpful and have the ambition to learn something new instead of “leading” a sad life filled with dependent consumption.
New modders should always join already existing projects to gain experience, to get an impression of the whole construct and – the main point - to learn from other modders. There is a 95% high probability that mod projects started by inexperienced newbies will die in approximately two or three weeks. As result of what I have seen in the aoe3 modding scene of HeavenGames I can tell you the most obvious indications of such a project: 1) You’ve never heard of that guy before - 2) He’s promising 500 maps, 10k new super cool units and 30 cultures - 3) His media are incredibly ugly… in general he is absolutely exaggerating and has no idea what he is actually talking about, promising things which are not possible or can not be done by one or two guys in a two lifes, all he did was having a dream and posting it.
To avoid bugged users and a demotivated newcomer you better don’t start projects like that and start practicing by joining an already existing project. At least one or two members of a team have pre-existing know-how that is more fertile and detailed than any tutorial could be. Nevertheless are tutorials the main reading for beginners. The Ancient Age is offering both. If someone wants to learn (any aspect of) modding, he can always give it a try by contacting us. =)

5. Besides AoE III, will you mod for any other games?

I doubt I’ll find the time for occupying that deeply with other games. TAA will demand my attention totally for a long time. I’m not sure what the future will bring, I also see my work for The Ancient Age as scheduling for the study of game design I looking forward excitedly.

6. Well, that's it for the interview, thanks for answering some questions for the readers.

np. ^^
