A look back: Defend The Island

I have changed the way the ALB posts work. Instead of writing a bunch of useless dribble, I'll post a shot and highlight it's important features from now on. This screenshot is a quite uncommon one, one of the main things to notice is the mysterious cyclops-like thing in the background again. On the left you can see another rarity: the apep myth unit which looked just like it did right before they axed it in 2002. The one final thing I would like to point out is that the flaming projectiles like from the catapult shown here would actually set the ship on fire, which is one more thing that was taken out from the boat's line of features. I'll leave you to gaze in awe at this image, leave comments.

Update: Olfsurk

My newest eyecandy map, olfsurk has currently been put on hold for now. Though fear not 60% of the map is already finished, though many parts may have to be remade. Though I'm sure you will enjoy the results. Expect progress to return soon before summer vacation.

New Weekly Screenshot: Swampland Brawl

Our latest screenshot on our upcoming expansion, The Roman Legion is finally out! The shot is my newest work and I seem to have succeeded in my original idea. The link below shows the latest screen down below in the gallery. Make sure to comment in the thread as well, we seem to be having an absence of patronage.

Interview: NinjaPenguin

At the last moment I was able to grab someone for an interview. This time I'm interviewing a lesser known member, ninjapenguin! I've got some interesting answers from him. Read on to see.

1. So how long have you worked with AoM?
I got AoM for Christmas the year it came out and played around with it for a while. After struggiling to find a copy of TT I immediately fell in love with the editor despite the fact I didn't understand triggers or anything else in the editor and mainly just made huge armies to fight each other. About a year ago I discovered AoMH and that's where I learnt how to do triggering and my not very good terrain mixing/ eyecandy.

2. so tell us more about your work.
I have only released one scenario which wasn't very good, but I have started many. I'm mainly into creating RPGs because the triggers are challenging.

3. And what's your latest project?
My latest project I am working on is 'Codename: AoMH' a scenario with as many people from AoMH I can get in it. The main characters are me, Yeebaagoon, Roxas, Bingo Little and Mephiles. I haven't got it all worked out yet, but I am sure I will complete this scenario.

4. What do you think your best project so far?
The best project I have made so far is probably either 'Raven's Eye' (never completed) or my joint scenario with Bingo Little (still not completed and not sure if it will be) but seeing as I haven't released much I can't really say.

5. With what other people are making now, what do you think of other people's scenarios?
I think that there are many interesting scenarios in construction at the moment such as Mephiles and Yeebaagoon's 'Desert Conflict' or Annodominus's 'ROME' I am looking forward to both of these and many others that are being showcased at the moment.

6. Besides AoM, what else do you play?
I mainly play fantasy RPGs such as final fantasy but I also enjoy RTSs and FPSs. My favourite game at the moment is probably AoM, but hoepfully will soon be getting a PS3 along with devil may cry 4.

7. Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions, do you have anything else to say?
Thank you for the interview. Anyone who is reading this please sign up to Codename: AoMH if you haven't already you can find threads in Scenario Design and Halls of Valhalla on the AoMH forums. Thanks. (Y)

CSC winners

The winner of the CSC for this week's Indiana Jones theme is Firefax with his "It's bound to be Booby Trapped" shot. The runner-ups are Elrich(Since he won last time) with his "Well Of Souls" entry and "Don't Bring A sword to A Gunfight" by HailToTheOboe. The next theme is "Nature", which I chose myself, I thought it would be a welcome break from the regular violent themes.

Interview: Alyssea

Welcome back, today we interview a premier scenario designer who is scurrently applying for PDS. Let's see what she has to say about her work.

1. Why are you so fond of AOM, how did you discover the game?
I've been into RTS games since I got AoE 1 On a cereal box (I think it was Corn Flakes), then I went on to buy AoE II, Never got the expansion of that though, then I saved up for AoM. I remember getting it the week it came out. After a while I got bored with Easy computers, I didn't have any internet and I wasn't good enough for a Moderate. I left it for a few years. In 2004 I got a Mac when I got into High school, and Since then I've moved up the line of OS's and Models. In 2007 I found AoM for Mac in an apple store and Bought it without hesitation. Many Months later I found AoMH.
The reason I'm so fond of them is, well, because I like the real time thing. The Idea of playing in an alternate world has always appealed to me.

2. What did you think of your first project?
My first project never got realized. I never deemed it worthy for AoMH. If I remember back, it was GrassA, A few buildings and a poor storyline. I left it and tried a few more times, then I decided I was going to do a campaign. I was determined. I spent all that day (I was on Holidays) Thinking of a story line on the beach, in stead of swimming. I finally came up with the Basis of the Shard.

3. So tell us more about your latest project(s)
Well, there's not much to tell about the shard. Its by far the biggest project i've taken on, With 5 scenario's and 6 Cinematics. I've done as much as I can to make it the best i possibly could do. I've made my own custom music in Garageband and Audacity, Sounds etc.
Xanth is interesting. Usually I say go for originality when making Scenario's, but in this one I used the story line of a book. I'm Interested to see if i'll ever finish it, or if it gets very far.
I've also got a secret project planned. Well, it more even I don't know about it than secret. So far I'm going to do a Cinematic. I want to practice them, so...

4. Your shard of the Blue Crystal project looks great, what do you plan with it now?
Well. First I need to play around with the music and sounds. Cutting it short, Lowering volume etc. to cooperate with the cinematics. I also need to re-do the last scenario - for reason's that I'm not saying. All in all, its mostly done. I might touch up a bit here and there, but yeah, its almost done. I'd say expect it no later than the end June.

5. You're still learning eye candy, am I correct? What are your main sources of ideas?
Books, My mind and other people. Sometimes I make a screenshot cause I was playing around in the shard and I came up with something neat. Sometimes I do it cause I read an awesome scene in a book and want to portray that. Sometimes I just have an Idea, its usually humorous. Apparently I have a bad sense of humor...Do I?

6. We seem to be getting some new designers around here, what is your advice to them.
Use the question thread so it doesn't kill your reputation early, look at other maps, ad experiment. None of the great people, Einstein, Newton, Gallelao(spelling?), etc. would be anywhere today without experimentation. Also, look at other peoples maps, but don't copy them. Be original.

7. That's it for this interview, any last comments for the readers?
Watch out for Baske, and try to get into Yeebaagoon's sig. If you get there, you'll be well know for ages...But I think the biggest thing is be original. be yourself. You'll get so much farther in life, and AoMH if you be yourself. Use good grammar and don't, I repeat, don't try to win the ferris wheel. Thats mine.

Update: Roman Legion Expansion

We have released a new screenshot for the Roman Legion about the triarius, a new infantry unit for the Romans. The background was done me, as usual but our new member, Scorpion Ra has created the helmet as his first task! Of course I will not be doing the next showcase, instead Brightgalrs will be in charge of it instead. The new showcase can be seen in the main thread.

The Showcase Thread: Only Through Here

Update: Roman Units

Master_foozle has definitely improved since his previous announcement, he has remade many of his units and added new ones. Some of my personal favorites include the quadrireme, the new velite, and the pedidatas. The units could use some work, though you can major improvement from the first versions. Oh, and if you are wondering how I am still here during the weekday, it is because I am sick and couldn't go today.

Interview: Gamericci

I recently interviewed gamericci and got some great answers from him, he has also explained some more about Project Unknown, so read on to find out:
1. So, Gamericci how did you discover AOM?

I don't know the correct date anymore. The only thing I know is, that it was before the AoM:TT Expansion came out. I found it in the school library(yes, library ;P). I hired it, and as I played it, it surprised me at everything; that game was and is still just amazing!

2. What would you say is your greatest achievement?

Tgis isn't very AoM related, but my greatest achievement until now is, that I found my apprentiship. In AoM I'd say, that the greatest achievemnt is, that I didn't give up my Age Of Guild Wars RPG until now.

3. I love "Project Unknow(n)", can you tell us more about it?

Well, you all should already know the part with the territories. I didn't tell what I'm goign to say here, because I really wanted it to stand here. As you should know, there will be three Races. This Races, will fight against eachother, for the territories, and their cities. Yes, their cities will also be capturable. But for that, the attacker will need a really big force! The cities won't also just stand there and look always the same. Each teritory brings some advantages. Let's say, the Race controls a territory, that has much iron ore. As longer as hes Race keeps that territori, the Guards of the cities will get more and more powerfull armor. That happens with everything. The cities will be at the beginning dirt and not very much people will walk in the streets. But with the time, and if the player is successful, the city gets cleaner and more and more people appear.

4. what other games do you play outside of AOM?

Outside of AoM: TT, I play not so many games. I still play Rome: Total War Gold Edition. Or Sid Meier's Civilization IV Gold Edition. I also play Warrock, a sort of free online-based Battlefield clone. When it really gets boring, I play Call of Duty 4 on my XBOX 360.

5. Do you have plans/goals for the far future?

I want to finish my Age of Guild Wars RPG, and then Codename Unknow(n). Afterwards, I'll take a break from Multiplayer-games and I'll work on ORPG.

6. That about wraps up this interview, any last words?

I wanna thank you for this Interview, and say something at everyone that is making a game at the moment: Don't give up, if you need help ask, because the real N00bs are those, who don't ask and just give up!

A look back: Attack The Egyptians

Today's screenshot is the last one of the early "rare" screenshots. It is also the only one where can see the early architecture of the Egyptian culture. This one has a lot of information, so prepare for a long read.
-BUILDINGS-
-Gate: The gate on the bottom is smaller and narrower than now and units would push open the doors when passing through, this proved problematic for animators.

-Wall: Here it seems it was much wider than now, the wall connectors are big as well. Though ES made it smaller too because it took up too much space.

-Market: On the left there is a small fraction of a market. It is only shown here, so I cannot say much about it.

-Armory: It appears very crude, so it must have been an age 1 building back then. The whole structure was eventually remade, the furnace was moved away from the actual building now.

-Temple I: It could have been a shrine though, that wide building never made into later versions of the stage, so it might have been just for decoration.

-Temple II: This one, even though it is cut off, is almost like the current one so you can picture what it might look like. Though it will still go through a rigorous development process.

-Watch tower: At the top of the shot another cut off building is seen, this one is almost like what we've seen in my previous post with the norse. The egyptian one appears more detailed than now, but sadly it was changed.

-Barracks: Two are seen at the top of the image, however both are not fully shown. It is only seen here, so we can only dream what it looks like.

-UNITS-
Catapult: The old catapult was longer and bears a striking resemblance to the catapult from the first Age Of Empires. Like the hundreds of other units it was resized because it would be hard for it to pass through narrow passgaes like those two walls.

Odysseus/Archer: There are actually two in this shot for some reason. It was a special unit for the greeks, but I'm not sure why there are more than one of him. He is what is now known as Odysseus, though originally he might have been a normal ranged unit.

Myrmidon: You can see the myrmidon better in other screenshots but here it is clearly shown that it had a different model and texture, it was remade again to fit in with the style of other units later on.

Peltast: Like the myrmidon, he can be seen better in future images, though he hasn't changed much since today. Probably the major differences are that his model was slightly changed and the stripes of his cape were taken off.

Siege Tower: You can see the siege tower is darker, yeah, yeah, but it has a drawbridge coming out of it over a wall! This meant originally garrisoned units can walk on it and get past the wall, that feature was taken out as well because of problems.

scorpion man I: I've talked about this unit before, here it appears darker and wears armor, which was possibly an upgrade.

scorpion man II: It's the same unit, but oddly enough, it has lost it's shell/team colors, I'm guessing this might have been some sort of feature where it loses it's shell/armor after a certain amount of hits.

Medusa: The current one looks a lot like this one except it isn't as skinny and it's hair isn't blocky like in this shot. The original plans for the medusa in this stage aren't known, so it's a pretty mysterious unit.

Ballista: Here it is seen again, except now with a different texture meaning it is the Egyptian equivalent. But in the final product, the ballista was left only to the Egyptians.

Sphinx: Though, yes it was more detailed, the sphinx was remade so it's style fit with other units. The sphinx is only seen in screenshots, so the true intentions of the unit were never discovered.

-OTHER-
-Columns: Seen here only, they were once bulkier and had strange holes on the top. If you look at the top, you can see they are also wall connectors, that might have been their actual use.

-flag: Amazingly, the flag was kept even till now, the wooden texture was differentiated though.

Remake Of Beta Screenshot

You might remember my Norse Sunset ALB post(Anyone). Well Tasev, star modder of AOMH has recreated it by using the old textures found in AOM's folders. It's a pretty nice imitation though I haven't realized up until now that the longboat texture can be found in there.

Announcement: Roman Units

No, it is not PDS' Roman Legion, a new modder, Master Foozle is attempting to make a mod with Roman military. However, the appearance does not look at all too appealing, but with the right training and polish, he might make a gem out of this modpack. These units are planned to be included in Master Foozle's new campaign "The Reign Of Theris". No word or information about the campaign though.

More Submissions

It seems many individuals are still submitting more material for my beta posts. Though most of the common information has been found already, I'm still getting material, some of which just blew me away. If you think you might have something for the ALB entries, email me and I'll mention you if you want when I post it.

Announcement: Project Unknow(n)

Gamericci, you can't tell what his next plans are, recently he announced "Project Uknow(n)" which takes place in a fantasy setting with the usual elves, dungeons, and dwarves. But something tells me this will be far from "usual". This scenario introduces capture able territories(15 in total). You can play as 3 different races spanning 4 unique classes. Once a flag is taken over, new units from your race appear to defend it. This is really something you should look forward to, Though I doubt this will come soon, you can wait for it in the meantime by trying out his "Age Of Guild Wars" or his other project under development "ORPG"

A look back: Norse Defense

This screenshot
is another one of the rare ones, released only to certain sites. This is one of the few screenshots to actually show units on boats.
-UNITS-
-Dwarf: This is pretty mysterious since it is only seen in the background, though it seems apparent he wore armor originally and had a slightly difeerent model

-Gatherer: Next to the dwarf, the gatherer can also be seen wearing armor. like the dwarf his model and texture are different.

-Jarl: The jarl like most units at the time were larger. Though the rider was changed, his horse hasn't changed too much though. This was uncommon at the time because everything was changed for quality reasons.

-Huskarl: Or at the time, the norse swordsman. There was another version with shields in a previous post, however this one is an earlier version.

-Throwing Axeman: The throwing axeman in this version shared it's model with the previously mentioned huskarl. The throwing axeman originally took threw the axes from his back like the egyptian spearman I mentioned in the last post, it was eliminated because it was hard to animate.

-BUILDINGS-
-Norse Dock: The first norse architecture was mostly stone and wooden walls, the dock shown here has a pier as part of the building, it was probably taken out because it was unecessary.

-Longhouse: In a later screenshot, the longhose is seen better, though you can see the building remains true to it's architectural style.

-Watch Tower: Like pretty much everything you see in the first stage, the watch tower was also large, about the size of a palm tree if you compare them in this shot. The tower doesn't appear to be attacking possibly because it might have needed units garrisoned inside for it to have offensive abilities.

CSC Winner

The winner of the CSC for this week's Women theme is Yeebaagooon with his "The only women only car park" shot. The runner-ups are SwordOfValor with his "Look At Those Puppies!" entry and "Give women romance, and we get what we want" by Baske. The next theme is "A grand Palace".

A look back: Egyptian Invasion

After many days of searching I have recovered from a website no longer in existence. This screenshot was not one of the weekly screenshots. It was given to special websites as exclusives.
-TERRAIN-
Greek tile: No longer available, it was later edited into the egyptian tile we have now.

Grass: Like other plants and trees from the time, the grass was dark green. The patches of dirt look nothing like the ones now.
-UNITS-
-Egyptian Spearman: The egyptian equivalent of the greek hoplite or norse pikeman, though they would be remade, the spearman idea was kept even till release. These spearmen actually put their spears on their backs when walking and took them out when fighting which was hard to animate.

-Chariot: The version you see here was actually kept like that till stage three. There isn't much you can say about these units as they are rarely seen. Though the horse clothes appear to have the same texture from the sphinx's headress.
-BUILDINGS-
Wall: This another one of the things kept till stage three. The reason possibly bing other things were being worked on instead. Actually the same model is used by the AGE 3 egyptian wall.

House: On the left, that small structure was the house for stage one. ES got rid of it because it didn't look too much like a house and they wanted more than one variation for houses.

Update: Olfsurk

My norse eyecandy map is nearing completion, right now it is actually more than halfway done. Though some areas had to be redone, but nevertheless it is still as good as you would will expect perhaps better. You can look for this coming out in the next few months.

Announcement thread; Click here

A look back: Beach Landing

Today's screenshot is the first weekly screenshot ES released which shows Age Of Mythology at a very primitive state. Player colors haven't been implemented yet so all units appear white.
-SEA UNITS-
Transport ship: Still with no team colors, you notice there is a villager coming on it. Adding on from my previous posts, an interview with bruce Shelley revealed that infantry units on a boat will cause the ship to have oars which makes it move faster.

Leviathan: Since most sea units were large at the time, the leviathan was as well. It looks pretty much like now except with dark green skin. Later in production, the leviathan was sized down like every other sea unit tough it's green texture was kept but changed somewhere along the way.
-MYTH UNITS-
Anubite: Much taller back then, the anubite originally had a tail which was taken out when it was completely redone. The anubite was changed a short while after this so only a few screenshots show him.
-OTHER-
Floating bodies: On the shore two strange bodies of villagers are floating on the shore. It is unknown whether this was a prop of some sort or that dead bodies would float on water after dying, it is most likely the second one.

Interview: Yeebaagooon

This week we're interviewing an important figure in AOMH, let's see what he has to say.
1. So, what's your latest project?
Officially it's Codename Michael Fish. I am so close to finishing it now, but the triggers have decided they don't want to work so we have to redo boss 4 :(. There's also loads of annoying little bugs in it.

Unofficially it's Pwnage Mythodea. I'm making this with USA_ThidDaY who has made some great mythodeas in the past. I wanted to make it so you level up with experience, but that is not possible because it is too balanced and everyone levels up in 20 minutes :p. The progress so far has been good.

2. What sort of phenomena are you planning next?
Planning a singleplayer campaign with Mephiles. The first scenario is already complete and I'm supposed to be working on the second one. The trouble will be giving up multiplayer for good. Designing for it can be more fun, but in singleplayer I still use mutliplayer triggers to avoid sync errors because I'm so used to it :p. Something always draws me back.
The audience for singleplayer is just so much bigger, and a lot more appreciative.

3. So, you manage downloads for AOMH, is that right? What are some weird submissions you get that don't get put into the downloads section?
ILB is still the head, but yes I do manage there. I have a 1 day policy where no submission has to wait longer than a day now. If you submitted something and was surprised how quick it went up, then that was probably me :p.

Every now and again we get some files that can't go up. Some of them are very offensive/racist and some are illegal. Don't really want to go into it though.

4. How did you get to the point you are now?
Papaya would say "Blowjobs. Lots of them." but on a more serious note... I think I was greenified quite quickly considering my bad start. I had to be a respectable figure within the community (owning the question thread really helps!), I had to have a mature attitude, good grammar (:D) and I had to wait for a vacancy.

5. What were you first like when you came to AOMH?
Total n00b :p. I had to be told to use the question thread quite a lot before I actually did and I kept posting my crazy ideas begging people to do them. But one day, without any knowledge of triggers apart from what they are, I made one :p. No idea how but I just made a trigger as I would today. Jungle Escape was my first major scenario, shabby by my standards now and with no eyecandy™. It was quite a complex scenario because of all thee quest vars, and was balance din a strange way where the hunters could win in minutes, and the runners could hide everywhere.
After the n00b phase, I evolved into what I am now :p.

6. Any words to new members of AOMH?
Use the question thread! When you join you are probably full of questions, it's best to ask in the question thread so you don't damage your reputation. Just act like a mature person and give nobody any reason to dislike you. Also, please don't feed the ducks.

7. Final words?
It's snowing over here :p. Yes in April! Madness you may ask? Madness? THIS IS BRITANIAAAAAAAAAA *Kicks n00b into pit of spam*. Anyway it really does snow here, crazy weather :p. I can never think of anything witty to say here :(. Oh well let's stick with tradition;
I'm off to the pub!

Announcement: Myth Upgrade mod

Dnas has made a mod to deal with myth units with no upgrade textures. This teture mod adds new textures to myth units which have been upgraded. Some of the textures look really good, the automaton being a fine example so it's worth the download. Though this mod was intended for users of the expansion, it may work for vanilla users as well.

The Announcement thread:

Announcement: Minotaur Gore mod

Peter Tasev has made a mod which will have units gored by the minotaur bleed as they soar. Here's a video of Age Of Mythology in production which was what this mod was based on. Another mod to make Age Of Mythology bloodier is now available!
